This was Gustavo Petro's speech, the first being president-elect

President-elect Gustavo Petro gave his victory speech after winning in the second round and pointed out three axes of his Government: peace, social justice and environmental justice.

Petro emphasized that he will promote regional dialogues "to build the reforms that Colombia needs to be able to live together in peace."

The next president said that he seeks a "great national agreement."

In addition, he made a call for dialogue with his opponents and assured that he seeks democratic capitalism.

Petro said his main objective is to bring Colombia to peace.

"It means that the 10 million or so voters of Rodolfo Hernández are welcome in this government," he said.

"Rodolfo Hernández, who had an interesting campaign, can talk to us whenever he wants. We are not going to use power to destroy the opponent."

"That opposition under whatever leadership they want — be it Uribe's, Federico's, or Rodolfo's — will always be welcome in the Palacio de Nariño to discuss Colombia's problems."

"In this government that is beginning there will never be political or legal persecution, there will only be respect and dialogue," Petro said in his speech.

Gustavo Petro is the first left-wing leader in Colombia after winning the country's face-to-face race.

Petro's running mate, vice-presidential candidate Francia Márquez, is now the first Afro-Colombian to hold executive powers.

The leftist leader narrowly won with more than 50% of the vote and was up against businessman Rodolfo Hernández, 77, former mayor of Bucaramanga, who got 47% of the vote.

Petro is a 62-year-old former guerrilla fighter and had two failed presidential attempts to his credit, this is his third presidential attempt.

He has campaigned for green energy and told CNN on Thursday that he will seek to start a negotiation with US President Joe Biden to "sign a new deal on clean energy production and protection of the Amazon instead of the current situation, where they only export coal and oil”.

The 62-year-old also suggested he would seek to renegotiate Colombia's association with NATO if elected: "I really need to see the fine print of that deal, but my ultimate goal is to keep Latin America out of military alliances: not China." , not to Russia and not to NATO”.
