Legislative: five maps to understand the second round in Paris

2022-06-20T09:53:23.620Z

The second round of the legislative elections reshuffled the cards in Paris and confirmed, even more, the gap between east and west.

More LR deputies in Paris, Together which resists against the Nupes and an abstention which differs according to the constituencies… The second round of the legislative elections is reshuffling the cards in Paris.

Discover the five lessons of the ballot in the capital.

Ensemble-Nupes: equality

The presidential coalition under the banner of Together and the New People's Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) both had nine deputies elected after the second round of legislative elections.

The border – already observed during the first round of the presidential election, between Emmanuel Macron and Jean-Luc Mélenchon – is clear: when the west votes in favor of the presidential majority, the east turns more to the candidates of the Nupes – three of whom had already been elected in the first round (in the 6th, 16th and 17th constituencies, Sophia Chikirou (53.74%), Sarah Legrain (56.51%) and Danièle Obono (57.07%)).

Nupes recovers anti-Macron voices

Difficult to know precisely the report of the votes which allowed the Nupes to progress in the in-between still in the capital.

Still, the progress of some candidates is dazzling.

In the 9th district of Paris, the ecologist Sandrine Rousseau increased her number of votes by 26.4% compared to the 1st round to obtain 58.05% of the vote (against 42.9% in the first round).

In the 10th constituency, Rodrigo Arenas wins 23.5% more votes and also manages to get elected.

Facing the barons of the majority Olivia Grégoire (in the 12th) and Gilles Le Gendre (in the 2nd), the number of votes in favor of the Nupes also jumped by more than 20%… without defeating them.

Same observation against Clément Beaune, in the 7th district of Paris, where the Minister Delegate in charge of Europe increased his number of votes by 14.9%.

Proof, perhaps, that Nupes has filled up with the voices of anti-Macron?

Together resist

Has Emmanuel Macron's message, asking for a "solid" majority, been heard by Parisians?

All the candidates of the presidential coalition, united under the banner Together, saw their number of votes jump between the first and the second round.

It must be said that faced with a united left, the potential reserve of votes was more in favor of the presidential majority.

In the 2nd constituency, Gilles Le Gendre, opposed to the Nupes Marine Rosset, thus won 64% more votes compared to last Sunday.

Same thing for the minister in danger Stanislas Guerini, who like Olivia Grégoire and Clément Beaune in the capital, saves his place by increasing his number of votes by 63.8%.

It doesn't always work: despite 46% more votes in her favor, Laetitia Avia lost in the 8th district.

LR disappears

It's a small earthquake in Paris, but it was predictable.

The only remaining LR candidates in the race, in the 4th and 14th constituencies, outgoing MP Brigitte Kuster (44.55%) and Francis Szpiner (46.77%) were eliminated by two presidential majority candidates, Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet (55.45%) and Benjamin Haddad (53.23%).

There will therefore be no LR deputy in Paris for this new legislature.

In 2017, three LR deputies were elected.

In 2012, six were elected under the UMP label.

Eight had been in 2007. This result logically follows that of Valérie Pécresse during the presidential election: the president of the region had obtained 6.59% of the votes during the first round.

A growing abstention

Abstention increased in Paris compared to the 1st round, rising from 45% to 45.6%.

However, it remains lower than at the national level (53.8%).

But it differs from constituency to constituency.

Thus, in the 11th constituency (where Maud Gatel and Olivia Polski clashed), it reached 39.9% and reached 52.1% in the 15th (where Danielle Simonnet faced Lamia El Aaraje).
