An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale hit Hualien County, eastern Taiwan.
"The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers east of the coast of Taiwan and was felt by residents throughout the island," the Chinese Seismological Center said in a statement today.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from this earthquake.
Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates in the South China Sea and is an earthquake prone area.
More than 100 people died in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, and more than 2,000 people were killed in a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1999.
