Russia strongly condemned Lithuania's imposition of restrictions on the movement of goods from Russia to the Kaliningrad region and summoned its Lithuanian Chargé d'Affairs, warning it of the consequences of this step.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov described Lithuania's move as an unprecedented measure that violates all rules, explaining that his country will take retaliatory measures after conducting a deep analysis of the step.

In turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Chargé d'Affairs to Lithuania in Moscow and informed it that Russia reserves the right to take measures to protect its national interests if the blockade of transit shipments to the Kaliningrad region does not stop completely.

The ministry said in a statement today that it had handed over the Lithuanian charge d'affaires in strong protest to her country's move in this regard, calling on it to immediately cancel this ban, stressing that Moscow considers Lithuania's clear hostile measures.

The ministry explained that the provocative measures taken by the Lithuanian side violate Lithuania's international legal obligations, in particular the 2002 joint statement of Russia and the European Union on transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the Russian territory.

For his part, Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation Andrei Klishas warned that Lithuania's measures represent practically an attempt to impose a siege on the Kaliningrad region, which may establish harsh retaliatory steps by Russia.

The Chairman of the Sovereignty Protection Committee of the Federation Council Andrei Klimov also confirmed earlier today that this blockade imposed by Lithuania cancels its membership in the European Union in relation to Russia and is a violation of the statement signed between Russia and the European Union in 2002, which stipulates Russia's right to cross into the Kaliningrad region.

The governor of the Russian Kaliningrad region, Anton Ali Khanov, confirmed yesterday that the ban on Lithuania's transit of goods to the region is illegal and does not comply with the provisions of the documents relating to the country's accession to the European Union.
