In the notorious piece of slopes in the Limburg pool, the new speed camera has already taken over 50,000 photos.

The police are happy.

El/Görgeshausen – It has been in operation for a little over six months: the speed camera bridge on the Elzer Berg over the A 3 in the direction of Frankfurt, which has been renewed for 1.1 million euros.

The police draw an initial positive balance, and the Hessian Ministry of Finance can continue to look forward to millions in income from the Westerwald.

Due to a lack of stability, the two old speed camera bridges installed in 1998 were dismantled in the direction of Frankfurt in autumn 2019 before the corona pandemic and the oak processionary moth caused the work on the construction of the new speed camera bridge to be significantly delayed.

In a cloak-and-dagger operation, the new speed camera bridge was finally installed with precision work at the beginning of June 2021.

After the final calibration and approval, the speed trap has been in operation again since November 11, 2021 - and speeders have to be careful again on the notorious slope down into the Limburg Basin, as reported by fnp.de.

A3 near Limburg: the number of accidents has fallen significantly over the years

The West Hesse police headquarters, which is responsible for radar control, has been satisfied with the new measuring system so far.

"With the new construction of the support bridge for speed enforcement on the Elzer Berg, the police have ensured continuous road safety work," said press spokesman Christian Wiepen on request.

With the construction and commissioning of the first stationary speed camera bridges in November 1973, the number of accidents and the number of injuries on Elzer Berg could be significantly reduced over the years.

"So it was important to the West Hesse police headquarters to continue this work in a future-proof manner," says Wiepen, explaining the reason why the decision was made to build a new radar bridge on Elzer Berg.

A little more than half a year since the commissioning of the new stationary system, it is clear that the newly built speed camera bridge offers the Wiesbaden motorway police, whose headquarters are not far from the Medenbach service area on the A3, above all the opportunity to save time and use staff elsewhere.

Blitzer auf der A3 bei Limburg: „Messanlage ist videoüberwacht und alarmgesichert“

Gone are the days when the highway police officers had to get into their company car in Medenbach, around 50 kilometers away, to drive to Elzer Berg for maintenance work or problems with the measuring technology.

"Since the commissioning of the new measuring system, the Wiesbaden police motorway station is able to access the measurement technology by means of data transfer - and that completely without the need to have to drive to the measuring system 50 kilometers away," describes police spokesman Christian Wiepen an advantage that has been commissioning of the new radar system at Elzer Berg.

"This time saving can be put to good use for other police traffic measures," says Wiepen.

For example, since November 2022 inspection and maintenance has been taken over by the manufacturers.

Even though several thousand racers have seen the red flash of flash due to their tempo shock of over 100 km/h at cars and over 80 km/h at trucks, nobody has yet dared to attack the speed camera.

This had happened in the past, including through shots with guns.

With the new radar trap on the "Katzenbuckel", as the slope down into the Limburg Basin is also commonly known, high safety standards have been set anyway.

"The measuring system itself is video-monitored and has an alarm system, so far no attacks on the measuring system have been recorded," said police spokesman Christof Wiepen on request.

An attack on the speed camera bridge or the technology house, which was located somewhat above the embankment, would have no chance anyway.

In contrast to the previous models, where the data from the traffic measurement still read, evaluated and then forwarded, this now happens completely automatically.

Speed cameras on the A3 near Limburg: fines bring in millions

However, the new speed camera bridge also has a side effect that the Hessian Ministry of Finance should be particularly pleased about: Despite the years of fame of the speed camera bridge on Elzer Berg, thousands of road users drive too fast at this point and are flashed every year.

As an evaluation by the regional council of Kassel as of March 22, which is available to our newspaper, shows that from the time the speed camera bridge was commissioned on November 11 to March 22, 50,661 road users were already traveling too fast during this period.

During this time, 683 car, truck drivers and Co. rested so much that a driving ban was imposed on them.

And the speed violations also bring in a good fortune financially: 2.96 million euros in fines have already been imposed for speeding since the new speed camera bridge on Elzer Berg went into operation until March 22nd.

Due to objections and court proceedings, according to the evaluation carried out at the time by the regional council, "only" around 1.24 million euros could be collected from the state of Hesse.

Throughout 2021, in which mobile measurements and a speed camera trailer were sometimes used before the speed camera bridge was put into operation, warnings and fines of around 2.55 million euros were imposed, of which around 1.8 million up to March 22nd euros were collected.

A total of 68,163 administrative offense procedures were initiated for speeding at Elzer Berg in 2021, 793 of whom even had to give up their driving licenses at times.
