A secret NATO report apparently says that the Ukraine war will rage on for months.

Foreign Minister Baerbock assumes that Putin is playing a dangerous "time game".

Munich – A blitzkrieg with the quick capture of Ukraine – that's what Russia's President Vladimir Putin probably had in mind when he had his soldiers march into the neighboring country on February 24.

But the Russian troops clearly missed the target.

For more than three months, the Ukrainian army has been defending itself against the Russian attack - supported by what are likely to be increasingly powerful deliveries of weapons from the West.

Putin's strategy is now focused on the Donbass, where street fighting has been raging for days and Russia is launching countless airstrikes.

NATO report: Ukraine war could last for months

If you trust a NATO report that the news portal

Business Insider

wants to know about, the war in eastern Ukraine will probably rage on for months.

The fighting in the Donbass would "probably continue for a few more months," said the classified paper earlier this week.

The "most intensive phase" is expected in the "next two months".

Business Insider

also quotes an internal military analysis by the federal government, which comes to a similar conclusion as the NATO report.

The Ukraine war could last several months, it said.

Putin's goal is to conquer the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and create a land connection to the Crimean Peninsula.

For this he was ready to take on a "long-lasting trench warfare with artillery".

Change of strategy of Putin?

Baerbock sees a new situation in the Ukraine war

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) also made such an assessment in the ARD “Focal Point” on Tuesday evening (May 31).

“We have to recognize that Putin has changed his strategy.

He assumed he could quickly and brutally invade Ukraine and then crush the country," Baerbock said.

Because that didn't work, Putin's strategy is "now designed for the long term."

"Staying power" is therefore now also needed when it comes to supporting Ukraine.

Above all, Ukraine needs air defense support, such as artillery and drones, “for the terrible thing that is happening in Donbass now.”

Otherwise there is a risk that "everything will be flattened in Donbass, and we have seen what that means in places like Bucha and Irpin," said the Foreign Minister.

Ukraine war: Baerbock warns of Russia's "fire-dangerous time game".

According to Baerbock, Putin's "time game" is extremely dangerous.

Should he win in the Donbass, he could sell this as a domestic political success and reorganize his army in order to conquer Ukraine completely.

Baerbock concluded: "Even if we are exhausted, we must do everything we can to defend Ukraine."

On Wednesday (June 1) it became known that Germany, like the United States, wants to supply Ukraine with multiple rocket launchers for defense - even though Russia had already threatened in advance that this would have consequences.

During the general debate in the Bundestag, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) also announced the delivery of the most modern air defense system that Germany currently has.
