The debate about mountain bikers moving in the mountains of the Tegernsee Valley has picked up speed again.

Other paths and trails are to be identified.

Two concrete projects give hope.

Tegernseer Tal

- It's the small proportion of unreasonable and ruthless mountain bikers that keeps fueling the debate.

Like the two cyclists, about whom the former mayor of Gmund, CSU district councilor and Almerer Georg von Preysing recently rumbled in the BR program “Now red i”.

"Although I confronted them and warned them that it was life-threatening, they rode their bikes over barbed wire and down the narrow path," reports Preysing.

"It's not just cheek, it's unbearable."

Mountain biking: apps and internet channels exacerbate the problem

The problem is the apps and other internet channels that indicate narrow climbs for cycling and the fact that there are too few trails and paths for this ever-growing group of cyclists.

Preysing, who was also represented at a round table of the Alpenregion Tegernsee Schliersee (ATS) in May, is following the progress of the steering group with mountain bike product developer Tim Coldewey critically.

Too little happens, according to Preysing's criticism.

The aim of the ATS: Release more routes this summer

Is that really the case?

"We're on the right track, but that just takes time," says ATS Managing Director Thorsten Schär, representing Tim Coldewey.

The goal is to "intensify the steering" and to release more routes in the course of this summer.

"These are not explicit mountain bike trails, but existing hiking trails that have already been cycled in a kind of gray area," Schär makes clear.

Where these paths are in the Tegernsee valley, he can't and doesn't want to read "in the newspaper yet".

One is definitely in talks with the state forests and private landowners, "but he does not want to endanger the ongoing process".

Problems with landowners thwart further projects

It's no secret that many alpine farmers don't cooperate when it comes to identifying cycle routes.

They already brought the end to the mountain bike festival, which had to move to Lake Achensee in 2017, and they are currently ensuring that the ATS in the entire Rottach-Egern area no longer pursues its plans.

Because a multitude of interests have to be taken into account - from landowners to nature conservation, communities and tourism professionals - it is a lengthy process until paths are actually available, says Schär.

Langenau Trail as a good example: "It's going really well there"

As an example, Schär cites the existing bike trail in the Kreuther Langenau - the trail that opened ten years ago and is still the only designated trail on Lake Tegernsee.

It is operated by Tegernseer Tal Tourismus GmbH (TTT) together with the municipality and the Bavarian State Forests and offers around seven kilometers of driving fun.

"It's going really well there," Schär praises and points to another trail that will open soon.

A trail for young bikers will soon open on the Hirschberg in Kreuth

Together with the Tegernsee Outdoor School and the PowderWorld MTB school, the TTT will open the first mountain bike children's trail in Kreuth am Hirschberg on June 24th.

With the support of MTB enthusiastic children, parents and volunteers, a trail was laid out as a "nature trail" on the Hirschberg.

The ascent is via a forest path, creating a circuit.

Use is free.

Bikepark Oedberg: Planning is progressing

A bike park is still in the planning phase, which after a long search for a location is now to be built on the Oedberg.

A meadow to the east of the leisure area, which has recently grown enormously, is planned for this purpose.

The Bike Crew Tegernsee - these are the idea generators Ralf Jirgens and Simon Englhart as well as Anton and Maria Haslauer - and the Oedberg GmbH want to create an attraction for young trail riders that follows the current trends.

A development plan is currently being drafted and changes to the land use plan are being initiated.

In April, according to Mayor Alfons Besel (FWG), the municipal council commissioned the planning office Lars Consult in a non-public meeting.

A nature conservation report is also currently being prepared.

Besel expects a planning period of at least nine months, during which authorities will also be involved.

Besel is convinced that the bike park will be realized, precisely because trails are created here that correspond to the goal of "guidance".

"Then the terrain is rounded and the lid on it."

Bike shop and service station are to be built on the Oedberg

The converted forest festival barn at the leisure area will be opened on July 1st.

The Bike-Crew Tegernsee will run a bike shop and a service station there.

In the barn, according to Oedberg Managing Director Georg Reisberger, there are also sanitary facilities as well as an office and a common room.

50 camper and 200 parking spaces were created here - "and are already being used actively," says Reisberger.

Another offer for cyclists on the Bodensee-Königssee route.
