France's President has lost an absolute majority in Parliament. The international press seems to agree: Macron is to blame himself. Many commentators now see Marine Le Pen as the big winner.

The final round of the French parliamentary elections ended with a defeat for Emmanuel Macron.

France's President has lost his absolute majority in Parliament.

In the future he will be dependent on the support of other forces in Parliament in order to push through his plans.

The international press commented the day after.

The British BBC

sees Macron as a "punished and severely weakened leader".

The French President is the architect of his own problems, the broadcaster analyzes on its website - and is already raising the question of Macron's successor.

The newly re-elected president cannot stand for another term.

For Macron, the result is a setback, "especially after he dramatized the situation last week," writes the British

Times

.

"He had described his opponents as dangerous extremists and urged the country to give him a 'solid majority' at the start of his second term because 'nothing would be worse than adding French disorder to global disorder'."

The media find clearer words in their own country.

Macron is "the specter of a stillborn five-year term" is the title of the editorial in

"Le Figaro"

.

The paper accuses the Macronists of making mistakes in the election campaign.

The second round of the general election is a reverse mirror of the presidential election and acts like an anti-Macron referendum.

»Le Monde«

sees the French National Assembly confronted with an »unprecedented situation«.

For Macron, the election result was a “severe political setback”.

"As of this morning, our country has been ungovernable, and no one should have the nerve to be content with that," comments

Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace

.

"If politics in France is still a martial art where destroying is more important than building, the next five years will be years of total and toxic deadlock."

The Spanish newspaper

El País

also commented on Macron's election defeat.

“Over the past five years, the concentration of power in the Elysée Palace has thwarted the role of Parliament.

But the general discontent has found outlets on the street or in the parties and candidates who challenge the system from the right and left fringes.

Macron now has to coordinate with other forces and get out of the Elysée, rule less vertically and listen more to the citizens.

For many daily newspapers in Germany, the results from France only came after the editorial deadline.

However, the »Berliner Tageszeitung«

took up the first projections.

"Emmanuel Macron's power is crumbling" is the title of the comment.

"The collapse of his alliance is a painful slap in the face, the loss of his absolute majority a shock for Macron."

The

"Süddeutsche Zeitung"

also writes about a blow against Macron.

This was also unexpected, according to the online comment.

"The parliamentary elections became a tool of punishment for the unloved man at the top," comments the newspaper.

The radicalism of the voters would probably be encouraged by the attempt at a middle-class coalition.

"So the left may triumph a bit this Sunday, but Marine Le Pen can be happy."

The

"Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung"

sees the election result as "the punishment for Macron's style".

The French President is now forced to show more consideration for Parliament.

The new conditions in Parliament would now promise a heated debate - "but also a long overdue revival of the parliamentary tradition in France".

"Rarely has a parliamentary election shaken France so much," says

zeit.de

this morning .

The biggest surprise of election night was that the Rassemblement National (RN), Marine Le Pen's party, was able to increase the number of its seats almost tenfold.

The big loser of this election is Macron.

For a long time he hadn't conducted a proper election campaign, sometimes looked to the left, sometimes to the right.

Now the French President is forced to cooperate more.
