Pflugdorf – After crossing the finish line after 28 sweaty and extremely strenuous laps (103 kilometers), Marcel Schrötter from Pflugdorf didn't know whether to be happy or annoyed.

Exhausted and exhausted, the Bavarian motorcycle pro fell to the ground for a moment, then grabbed a German flag and drove a lap of honor in front of around 90,000 spectators at the Sachsenring.

He really deserved it: Schrötter raced to 4th place at the German Grand Prix on Sunday, his “home race” – his seventh top ten and fifth top 5 finish this season, his third 4th place to Austin and Portimao.

Really strong and a great performance, but the icing on the cake was missing: Although girlfriend Michelle and ski star Thomas Dreßen, the Kitzbühel winner, crossed their fingers on site, the 29-year-old Kalex pilot missed the big goal he had set himself close: He missed the podium by a tenth of a second in the victory of the Spaniard Augusto Fernandez.

In 2019, local hero Marcel Schrötter finished third in his home race - he would have loved to do that again this year.

The signs were good: The man from Pflugdorf delivered his best qualifying for two years and started from 5th place. “I'm in a good mood and have a good starting position.

I'll give everything," he said shortly before the start.

He caught it well and immediately moved up to 2nd place behind Fernandez.

However, this position was quickly lost again and the number 23 formed a group of three chasing with Pedro Acosta and the Englishman Sam Lowes.

On the penultimate lap, Schrötter was even able to oust Lowes from 3rd place and maintain the supposed podium position for half a lap before a shifting error in turn twelve threw him back and Lowes overtook him again.

"After taking a deep breath, I'm really happy about this fourth place," says the man from Pflugdorf.

He admitted: “At first, however, the disappointment of missing the podium outweighed the disappointment.

But we have to take the positives from this beautiful weekend and that includes the race result.

I performed well over the three days and it's certainly not easy to live up to all the expectations.

I did my best from start to finish.

Still, I would have liked to have been on the podium.

But I took another step towards the top 3.

You have to take this momentum with you.

I've had the feeling for a long time that I can fight in this area in every race and then a lot more is possible."

Schrötter says: “The race was one of the most strenuous this season.

It was incredibly difficult to drive, I was in danger of falling in almost every corner.

It was therefore extremely difficult to regain lost ground.

There were also several slides where I kept losing the connection.

Unfortunately, I had problems with my left foot, which is why I made a small mistake in the penultimate corner.

I was able to save the situation, but almost ended up in the gravel bed.

That's why I lost third place, which I had just won.

Fourth place again brought many important points for the championship, where everything is getting closer and closer.

A big thank you to the great audience.

It was incredibly fun to drive here again in front of a full house.”

There was also praise from Dreßen: "It's amazing how the guys push themselves to the limit".

And from IntactGP team boss Jürgen Lingg: “A great race.

We can be happy.

I would have treated Marcel to the podium, he put on a very good show.”

In the overall World Championship standings in the Moto2 class, the man from Pflugdorf is still in 7th place with 88 points after ten of 21 races.

The next race will take place in Assen (Holland) next Sunday, June 26th.

Schrötter: "We'll attack again." Then it's on to the five-week summer break.

The race starts again at 12.20 p.m., ServusTV broadcasts live as always.
