The chaos at Hamburg Airport never ends.

Now the Senate is asking the federal government for help.

The FDP is not enough.

Hamburg – Only last week did Hamburg Airport report as many passengers as before the corona pandemic for the first time.

More than 1.1 million travelers chose the airport as their departure or destination airport in May 2022 - "a traffic level that exceeded expectations", according to the airport's website.

Only weeks ago, those responsible had calculated 45,000 passengers per day - albeit on peak days.

Now the expectations of the operating company have been exceeded.

Is the incorrect assessment perhaps one of the reasons for the ongoing suitcase chaos?

Hamburg Airport: Baggage chaos and long waiting times

The patience of travelers at Hamburg Airport has been regularly tested for weeks.

In March, wage disputes between security staff at the airport and employers caused flight cancellations, but the long waiting times in front of security checkpoints and unprocessed suitcases then came to the fore.

Various photos of unattended luggage lying around are circulating on social media, for which no one seems to feel responsible, as reported by 24hamburg.de.

The case of an orchestra of the famous Milan opera Scala recently attracted a lot of media attention.

The more than 100 musicians were stranded after a concert in the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and were then left to their own devices at the airport.

All employees had already left the airport by this time.

24hamburg.de also has reports from travelers about hundreds of suitcases standing around and waiting times of up to two hours at baggage claim.

Now the Hamburg Senate is even calling on federal politics for help due to the airport chaos.

Chaos at Hamburg Airport: Senate asks the federal government for help

The independent Hamburg Senator for Economic Affairs Michael Westhagemann met with representatives of the airport and the federal police on June 2, 2022.

This is responsible for security checks, and the federal police have hired an external service provider for this at Hamburg Airport.

The problem is not new - and by no means a hamburger.

The regional manager responsible for the north of FraSec, a subsidiary of Frankfurt Airport, recently had to admit that there were staff shortages.

According to the daily newspaper Die Welt, on June 10 Westhagemann asked Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) for measures that should lead to a short-term improvement in the situation at Hamburg Airport.

Westhagemann also wants to get in touch with Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) on this matter, the newspaper continues.

The FDP in the Hamburg Parliament does not go far enough.

Chaos at Hamburg Airport: FDP calls on Senate to act

FDP parliamentarian Anna von Treuenfels-Frowein makes serious accusations against the Hamburg state government and called on the Hamburg Senate to act.

The Norddeutscher Rundfunk quoted the MP as saying: "Red-Green ignores the catastrophic waiting times at Hamburg Airport by hiding behind federal responsibilities."

The airport is not only the figurehead of the city, but the city itself is also involved in the airport, it is said.

It is not yet known exactly what Michael Westhagemann's demands to the federal government are, the same applies to the demands of the FDP to the Hamburg Senate.

Hamburg Airport: Travelers can do this - these alternatives are available in northern Germany

With the start of the summer holidays in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein at the beginning of July, a renewed increase in passenger numbers is expected.

The airport itself has given tips on what travelers can do to counteract the suitcase chaos at Hamburg Airport.

But of course the influence of the passengers on the processes is small.

A further complication is the cancellation of more than 1,000 Germany-wide and intra-European flights by the Lufthansa Group, which will also affect Hamburg.

Lufthansa's low-cost subsidiary Eurowings is the largest stationed airline at Hamburg Airport.

As an alternative to Hamburg Airport, travelers should also consider Lübeck and Rostock-Laage Airports when planning their vacation.

Lübeck and Rostock not only attract visitors with attractive destinations, the two northern German airports also charge significantly lower parking fees.

Waiting times and suitcase chaos are not to be expected in Lübeck and Rostock, even during weddings.
