“You have cancer”… It is true that it was a phrase that sounded frightening to my ears, but it was not like that for me, and I did not feel any sense of fear, and I was very certain that I had it, and at the same time I had enough courage and strength to receive the news of the injury and psychological readiness to fight it My battle is surrounded by the love and support of my family members, and I fight with all my energy to reach safety.. This is what Mrs. Fawzia Saleh Khaddam expressed with a hopeful smile on her face, which was not without signs of fatigue and exhaustion.
Khaddam returned to her normal life and practice her favorite work from home farming to cooking and exercising, after passing a long way from the journey of treatment for breast cancer, which she had started three years ago, with the hope of being crowned with a full recovery.
Khaddam recounted her story, which began in 2019, after she discovered the appearance of a small lump on the right breast after it fell to the ground while doing household chores, but she did not pay any attention to the matter and it took some time before she decided to consult her niece, a gynecologist, to investigate the nature of this mass, as the latter examined her and rushed To call on her sister, who specializes as a pediatrician, to book an appointment for her to perform a mammogram, followed by a review of the oncologist, who recommended the necessity of a complete mastectomy after reviewing the histopathological results of the mass and the CT scan that showed a lymph nodes with cancer.
Khaddam, who completed chemotherapy and radiotherapy and is now in the hormonal treatment phase, added: “I received the news with a lot of calm, despite the shock that seemed clear in the faces of my family members, and unlike them, I felt hope and psychological comfort because the success of the eradication operation will put an end to the presence of cancer in my body, my condition is much better than The other cases that I encountered during my visits to the Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy Center in Tishreen University Hospital to take the doses,” noting that she had prevented her hair from falling out by cutting it after the first session of chemotherapy, and she did not suffer from any of the common symptoms that accompany the treatment, such as feeling sick, vomiting or general weakness.
Khaddam indicated that the psychological state and acceptance of the idea of the disease and not being afraid of confronting it plays a major role in recovery, as she was keen to enjoy her time with her family and friends and to practice walking daily in addition to following health instructions and adherence to some dietary habits such as staying away from sugar and compensating for it by eating dates and raisins and leaving fat And grease, in addition to the role of the doctor supervising the treatment in raising the spirits of patients and spreading positive energy in their tired souls.
At the conclusion of her speech, Khaddam gave advice to women of different age groups on the importance of examining themselves, reassuring themselves of their health and safety, and taking up the challenge instead of waiting and showing strength, because by doing so, they help protect themselves from disease and shorten the arduous path towards recovery.
