An iconic floating restaurant in Hong Kong, founded in October 1976, sank after being dragged to sea a few days earlier to an unknown destination.
Jumbo Kingdom, a three-story ship that was considered one of the largest floating restaurants in the world, was towed yesterday after half a century docked in the city's waters.
The ship made its way to an unknown shipyard when it capsized on Saturday due to "harsh conditions" off the Faroe Islands in the South China Sea, the company that operates it, Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises announced yesterday (Monday).
The ship sank at a depth of a thousand meters, which made rescue very difficult, the statement said.
"No crew member was injured during the accident."
Jumbo Kingdom Trailed
The 80-meter-long restaurant was the main ship in the Jumbo Kingdom, which included a smaller floating restaurant, a barge carrying containers of seafood, an insurer ship and eight small ferries to carry passengers between piers.
At the time, Jumbo Kingdom starred in international films and hosted leaders such as Queen Elizabeth II, former President Jimmy Carter and actor Tom Cruise.
However, as the fishing population in Hong Kong's southern port dwindled, the ship's popularity declined, and it suffered a 2013 deficit.
The Corona plague was the final blow, and the restaurant closed in 2020 until further notice.
