An Australian study warned that obese children are more likely to develop dementia.
And according to the Independent, scientists from Monash University in Melbourne, after conducting tests on 1,200 cases, indicated that obesity in children leads with age to the possibility of cognitive decline caused by a neurological disorder characterized by weak cognitive abilities in middle age, which may lead to complete dementia.
The researchers called for preventive strategies against future cognitive decline to be followed and implemented from early childhood, including exercise, eating oily fish, fruits and vegetables, while reducing fatty and sugary foods so that the brain can develop its capacity further to cope with conditions such as dementia.
"Children who develop muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness and endurance due to exercise and movement are known to have better health outcomes later in life," said lead study author Michelle Kalisaya.
This is the first significant study looking at the links between objectively measured fitness and childhood obesity and cognitive abilities in middle age.
