Collective volume from 60 years of publishing history: The picture book gang
Photo: NorthSouth
In theory, of course, you can read any book aloud.
Also the seventh volume in a series.
But isn't it excruciating when the story is predictable, the pictures ghastly, or the sentences clumsy?
A good book is characterized by the fact that both young and old read it with profit.
So-called house books, from which you can choose something together, are practical.
Various fairy tales, fables or poems are collected here in one volume.
In the past, such editions were often one of the few household books that were then read to the whole family.
Reading is a wonderful activity to do with children.
It combines physical and mental closeness and doesn't have to end with the child being able to read for themselves.
These five books are a colorful selection for different age groups: play rhymes, animal poems, a bag full of picture books and two stories about a crocodile in distress and a gorilla who travels halfway around the world.

Discovering the body, the fingers, the foot and talking to each other, laughing, tickling - that's what nursery rhymes are made for.
Every child who experiences such a playful togetherness also gets an additional portion of impulses and love, I think.
The book is recommended for ages two and up, but I think some of it is great for keeping babies happy on the changing table.
What's going on here?
Hmm, how does that work with the fingers, the typing, the rhyme?
This collection gets our memory going again, because in addition to the rhymes, there is also what to do with our hands.
Thanks to the funny pictures with flying women and dragon heads, the older siblings are sure to want to take part.

When publishers publish anthologies, they choose suitable stories from their program on a theme such as Christmas or animals.
The reason for this issue was simply the company's 60th anniversary.
A lot comes together.
That's why it's so difficult that it's best to sit at a table with the child so that you can hold them relaxed and read.

It's you, it's me: This story is told by two people, uh, characters.
The author and the crocodile Ben.
Perfect for taking turns reading the funny dialogues.
Since the two are marked with different colors in the book, it is easy to find his text.
What's going on here?
In the mangrove forests, called billabong by the native people, lives a big-mouthed crocodile named Ben.

When I first held this book in my hands, I didn't like it very much.
That weird monkey head on the cover.
The dark drawings.
nope
funny story.
But then I recently read the second volume (to be published in July) and was struck by the unusual idea and the beautiful narrative tone.
Thanks to the translator!
I've now read the first volume with pleasure.
The black and white images convey a mood of the time and capture interesting moments of the plot.
Because it's always better to start with the first story, I'm recommending it now, a few years late.
What's going on here?
Crazy exciting crime story from another world, told by the gorilla woman Sally Jones.
Around 1900 she went to sea as an engineer with the Finnish captain Henry Koskela and lived an admittedly unusual but good life.
Until her boss ends up in prison and she desperately tries to prove his innocence.

Background: Product tests in the Tests department
Expand areaWhich products are reported on?
We decide for ourselves which products we report on in the test department and which we test or not. We do not receive any money or other consideration from the manufacturers for any of the test reports.
It can happen for various reasons that we do not report on products even though we have corresponding test products.
Open areaWhere do the test products come from?
Test devices and review copies of games are usually made available to us by the manufacturer free of charge for a certain period of time, sometimes even before the official release.
This allows our test reports to appear in time or close to the release of the product.
We only test pre-release versions or devices from pre-series production in special cases.
As a rule, we wait until we can get test devices or game versions that are identical to the retail versions.
In some cases, if they are already available in stores or online, we purchase test devices at our own expense.
Expand areaCan the editors keep the products?
Articles in the testing department contain so-called affiliate ads that contain links to online shops.
If a user visits one of these shops via such a link and makes a purchase there, DER SPIEGEL receives a share of the sales in the form of a commission, but never the author individually.
The ads appear in articles regardless of whether a product test is positive or negative.
