British researchers have developed a new technology that helps diagnose Alzheimer's disease quickly and with high accuracy using machine learning technology.
According to the Nature Port Folio Journal, researchers at the Imperial Center for Biomedical Research in Britain have adapted the algorithm that was developed for use in the classification of cancerous tumors and applied it to the brain.
The researchers tested the brain scans of more than 400 patients with early- and late-stage Alzheimer's disease, healthy controls, and patients with other neurological conditions including frontotemporal dementia and Parkinson's disease, and tested data from more than 80 patients undergoing diagnostic tests for Alzheimer's at Imperial College Hospitals.
The researchers found that in 98 percent of cases, the MRI-based machine learning system could accurately predict whether a patient had Alzheimer's disease or not, and they were also able to distinguish between early and late-stage Alzheimer's with high accuracy in 79 percent of patients.
