Strawberries are in season right now.

As in the years before the pandemic, the "Korona" variety is particularly popular.

District - Small, red, round and sweet: It is high season for local strawberries.

"Right now is the best time to pick, as the medium-sized varieties are beginning to ripen," explains strawberry farmer Johann Lang.

He owns nine strawberry fields, including in Ebersberg, Egmating, Grafing, Hohenlinden and Vaterstetten.

During the Pentecost holidays, the rush of customers was particularly exciting: "The question is always: How many are vacationing with us and how many are going away?" he explains.

So far he cannot complain about the number of customers, especially on the weekends the fields are well attended.

Johann Schimpf can only agree with his field between Poing and Angelrechting.

The weather is the most important factor, especially when it comes to his self-picking system: "It's often the case that if the weather is bad for a long time, then when the weather is nice everyone comes at once, if the weather is nice for longer, it's spread out more over the individual days," he knows

In this season, however, the weather is currently "optimal".

Egmatinger strawberry farmer: "People buy fewer and smaller quantities"

"It's more restrained," says Sigmund Adlmeier in Egmating on the fields.

"People are buying fewer and smaller quantities," is his interim conclusion.

People are simply more thrifty, he suspects: “People look at their money more than they have in the past, and you can tell that with tips.

They have it handed out to the tenth.”

However, Adlmeier does not fear a negative business, as strawberry farmers in other regions of Bavaria complain.

He hopes that after the Pentecost holidays, returning holidaymakers will increasingly return to the fields to pick.

That's why he didn't raise the prices: "I already suspected something like that."

Prices had to be increased slightly

Farmer Lang, on the other hand, had to raise prices "very slightly", after all he was just as affected by rising energy, gas and fuel costs as everyone else: "The costs of everything are rising, that's a general fact," he summarizes.

However, quality and customer satisfaction would still be his top priority, he emphasizes: "Don't whine, everyone has to deal with the situation."

Schimpf also had to “minimally” increase the prices for the strawberries picked by his employees.

The self-pickers continue to pay the same prices as in previous years.

Although he has also heard from one or the other Munich farmer that sales are declining, he has not had this impression in his field so far.

Especially his main variety "Korona, like the disease only with K", is still very popular.

Strawberry farmer: "In our district, the people are still good"

And if one or the other strawberry is left over, that's not so bad.

"Strawberries are a very perishable fruit, you can't save them like grain or potatoes, but have to be picked and sold," says Schimpf.

Due to the lack of a time buffer, there would only be the option of either selling the fruit at dumping prices, so that the farmer pays more in the end, or mulching part of the harvest: “That is not unusual because the damage would be much greater when I'm short on strawberries than when I have to mulch too much,” he explains.

Letting fruit grow exactly when there is demand is just an impossibility.

Especially for families, the fields are a good opportunity for a trip to collect and snack.

On the other hand, the three farmers agree that there is no need for a “snack package”, i.e. an entrance fee for the strawberries eaten in the field, as there are in some fields around Munich: “In our district, the people are still good ' explains Long.

As long as everyone behaves according to the motto "snacking doesn't mean eating too much", one or the other strawberry consumed on site is completely fine.
