The world turns its eyes to Elmau.

The G7 heads of state will meet in the Schlosshotel in the Wetterstein Mountains next weekend.

But they will have their first contact with the host country, Germany, at Munich Airport.

Airport - This will then have a very special hub function: Because from here helicopters take you to Werdenfelser Land.

The airport has a lot of experience with political celebrities and the associated security requirements, not only because of the Munich Security Conference every February, but also because of the G7 summit, which also took place in Elmau in 2015.

The most recent big reception dates from February 17, 2022, when US Vice President Kamala Harris landed in the Erdinger Moos and was received by Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder.

The planes of the top politicians have always headed for the Southwest apron in the Lufthansa Technik area and also stopped there.

The heads of government of England, France, Canada, Italy, Japan and the USA are already expected on Saturday.

According to our newspaper, all other guests and the heads of state of other invited countries are expected on Sunday.

The latter are guests at a Söder reception in Munich on Sunday evening.

It's not far from the airport.

Because on the south-western edge of the apron, the helicopters are mainly used by the federal police.

They fly state guests to Elmau.

Unless the weather is miserable.

Then it's off in car convoys towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

But even when the sun is shining, motorists on the A 92, A 9 and A 95 will have to reckon with obstructions and closures again and again from next weekend.

The entourage of the "Big 7" drives south by car.

At least at the airport, passengers and onlookers will not see much of the summit.

"Since the state guests do not use the terminals, there are no impairments and longer waiting times to be expected here," assures FMG spokesman Robert Wilhelm when asked by our newspaper.

On the other hand, fans would have no opportunity to see US President Joe Biden, Wilhelm adds.

However, those familiar with the location know: From the viewing hill on the southern runway - between Schwaig and Hallbergmoos - you can see the apron with the presidential planes, including the legendary Air Force One.

If you want to be closer to the action: the channel ntv provides images from the airport for all TV stations;

Broadcasters and agencies are represented with their own teams at the airport.

Police officers from all over Germany are brought together for G7.

The federal police at the airport are also armed.

Their spokesman Christian Köglmeier announced that "we are tightening the controls".

The temporary reintroduction of border controls also applies to air traffic.

"This means that the federal police are also temporarily checking documents from travelers from the Schengen area," said Köglmeier.

The aim is to intercept potentially violent summit opponents beforehand.

In some cases, you get support from other departments.

“For the most part, however, it is our officers from the airport who cannot go on vacation at the moment.” The federal police have 1,500 employees at the airport alone.

They also reinforce the patrols.
