Herzog: "The Yemeni Children's Affair is an Open Wound in Israeli Society" | Israel today

The President held an event on the abduction of children in the first years of the state and expressed support for the further investigation of the affair • "I am glad that there are those who act out of a deep commitment to exposing the truth in the affair," the President said

President Yitzhak Herzog today attended an event marking awareness of the disappearance of Yemeni, Eastern and Balkan children at the President's House and called for further investigation into the affair, which he says is a "deep wound" in Israeli society.

At the event, the president said: "At the heart of Israeli society, a blood-soaked and painful wound, frustrating and excruciating, is unparalleled.

The many question marks that accompany this open wound continue to deepen the pain, even as decades go by.

This is a wound of a serious and disturbing affair, the pursuit of which accompanies me, as a public figure for many years.

The affair of the disappearance of toddlers from among the families of Yemeni, Eastern and Balkan immigrants is one of the most difficult and painful events that Israeli society has experienced. "

"I am happy that there are those who act out of a deep commitment to exposing the truth in the affair, and do everything possible so that it does not fall off the agenda. I would like to express my appreciation and thank you, MK Keren Barak and MK Naama Lazimi, , And to you too, former Knesset member Nurit Koren, for your important work on the issue, for many years, including during your tenure in the Knesset of Israel. "For many years to raise awareness of the painful affair, while standing by the families' side," Herzog said.

The President referred to the various commissions of inquiry that discussed the matter and said: I am not standing here to argue with their conclusions.

And yet, it is clear to me that the wound is still open, and that we must - for all of us - continue to get to the root of the affair and explore the truth, and do everything in our power to give healing;

In order to bring about healing.

This is why, when I served as Member of Knesset and Leader of the Opposition, I worked with many of you, with a clear understanding that we are committed to researching the affair in depth, opening the archives in full, turning every stone, and trying to delve into every detail of the affair, document and commemorate it.

It was clear to me that this was the least we could do for the families.

"By virtue of this approach, I once put on the Knesset table a detailed bill, which seeks to amend and justify the investigation, healing and commemoration of the affair. I welcome the initiative to promote a similar bill, based in part on my proposal, meaning real responsibility, recognition, and action. "Concrete and deep that will lay the groundwork for a process of thorough social healing," the president added.

Rest assured my friends, that as President of the State, and as this affair has occupied him for many years, I will continue to assist closely, in thought and deed, this painful affair;

In an attempt that we all share, to find out, to explore, and to find a cure for the grieving souls.

Thank you very much, "Herzog concluded
