Ludwig Mörtl shaped the monastery village of Erling.

For 20 years he was mayor, first of Erling, then of the new municipality of Andechs.

In his honor and on the occasion of his 80th birthday in April, the municipality has now dedicated a separate trail to him.

Erling

– The former mayor was very happy about that, you could tell.

A Ludwig-Mörtl-Steig right past his house, he liked that idea when he was told that the shortcut to the monastery in Erling should be named after him.

The trail was inaugurated yesterday.

In his thoughts, Ludwig Mörtl returned to the old days.

In 1972, the bank manager was elected to the municipal council, and in 1974 he became mayor of Erling, just as his father and grandfather were before him.

At that time, the monastery village was still managed independently, and Mörtl got caught up in the turmoil of local government reform.

Erling and Frieding should be co-managed by Herrsching.

An absurdity in Mörtl's eyes.

Together with the then Abbot Odilo Lechner he fought for independence.

Your idea of merging the three independent municipalities of Erling, Frieding and Machtlfing under the name Andechs was well received by the Ministry of the Interior.

Mörtl remembers it well.

"It wasn't easy," he says.

There were many conversations, always with the abbot at his side, whose dignified, friendly demeanor in his habit also opened many doors for Mörtl.

In 1978 he finally held the certificate in his hand.

Mörtl was thus the first mayor of the new municipality of Andechs.

The incumbent mayor Georg Scheitz was still a child at the time, but he too can remember well

Mörtl was mayor of the Holy Mountain for 20 years

Ludwig Mörtl remained mayor until 1994.

20 years in total.

As long as no one before and so far also after him.

He might have stayed longer, even as the next district administrator, the founder of the Andechs citizens' group was traded at the time.

However, the double burden of work (bank director of the Raiffeisen bank) and honorary post took its toll, because it was not until the late 1990s that the honorary post of mayor in Andechs became a full-time post.

"Back then, I was still working 16 hours almost every day," Mörtl remembers.

For health reasons, he finally had to resign from his local political offices in 1994.

During his tenure, the kindergarten, the fire brigade equipment houses in Erling and in Machtlfing and the school were built.

Erling's 1200 year celebration also took place in 1976 under Mörtl.

"The path is a little how your life went," said his after-after successor Scheitz yesterday.

“It starts in a beautiful and historical place, then goes up steeply with numerous stairs and difficulties.

And on the home stretch, which is still slightly uphill, you have a nice view both ahead and back.

Nice that it also leads past the Mörtl estate.

So this trail is made for our former mayor.”

The picture hits the core.

The approximately 400 meter long trail goes up 17 steps to the car park at Benedikter, where it continues to the left in the direction of Kiental and the monastery.

A popular shortcut for locals when they go shopping and for pilgrims from Herrsching who choose the slightly longer but less steep route option via the Kientalstraße up to the Holy Mountain, or for those going to the monastery from the south.

The locals like to call the path the pilgrimage trail.

Now he has an official, official name.
