When you arrive on the sunny Place des Marronniers, you can't miss them, these huge white capitals that seem to be shoehorned in between the trees.

But it was not a shoehorn but rather a chainsaw that was used to make the installation possible this weekend.

Thirteen trees, red chestnut trees and common horse chestnut trees, saw part of their branches cut so that the barnum could take place to shelter authors and books, planned in number on June 25 and 26, for Saint-Maur en Poche .

"We had not yet pruned them so that they take their place"

A decision, learned after the fact by the elected officials, which put them in a black anger.

“I am scandalized,” insists Sylvain Berrios (LR), mayor of Saint-Maur.

As soon as he was notified, he asked the municipal police to go to the scene.

A report per tree for "damage to a public good" has thus been drawn up and gives rise to a fine.

“They massacred them, laments the chosen one.

These are young subjects who are in their twenties and who had not yet been pruned so that they take their place.

All this while their system is modular, they could very well reduce the size of the barnum by one meter!

“It was impossible once there, the size of the tents is not adjustable, answers the operations manager of the Lourdel tents.

We had indicated during a technical visit to the site on June 15 that it would be necessary to cut some of them, a person in charge of the town hall had undertaken to do so.

Sunday, seeing that it was not done, we had no choice but to do it, again with a verbal agreement from a representative of the town hall.

It was done properly and we always avoid it as much as possible.

The city has brought in its specialists, who ensure that the trees will recover, but it will be necessary to prune to rebalance the chestnut trees.

“We will send the invoice to the company, it will be part of the sanctions”, still storms Sylvain Berrios, already in the grip of a controversy over a construction on a plot where an oak tree has lived for several centuries.

“We are going to find out what exactly happened”

For its part, the company recalls that it was mandated by the city to install these barnums, as part of the response to a call for tenders.

“We don't want to make things worse, but we haven't received any minutes or calls from the town hall, adds the operations manager of Lourdel, specializing in barnums for more than 100 years.

We are going to find out exactly what happened and we are at the disposal of the city.

The city ensures that the minutes have been written and will be sent by mail and that the CEO of Lourdel was called on Sunday.

"We said that if branches were a problem, we would see it together on a case-by-case basis, but we never agreed to have them cut them", assure the mayor's office.

Denounced by the elected environmentalists of the city, but also relayed by the city on social networks, the cutting of trees saddens the residents in any case.

“They took advantage of the fact that it was Sunday and that all the shops were closed, otherwise we would have intervened, storms a waitress from a local restaurant.

All this for an event that only lasts three days!
