The Italian authorities declared a state of disaster in the Lazio region due to the severe drought that hit the center of the country and other regions, especially in the north.
"The declaration of a state of disaster aims to take measures such as providing water for all activities, starting with domestic consumption," the Italian news agency ANSA quoted Nicola Zingaretti, the governor of the region that includes the capital, Rome.
The drought was not limited to Lazio, as it hit other regions in northern Italy, and the authorities are expected to declare a state of disaster in them as well.
Italy was recently swept by a state of panic with the decline of three-quarters of the waters of the Po River, which is its most important river and threatens more than 30% of the production of national farms, while the damage is currently estimated at more than two billion euros, amid the worst drought in the country in 70 years.
