The US magazine Newsweek revealed that members of the Republican Party in the US state of Texas are pushing for the organization of a popular referendum on the state's secession from the United States.

The magazine stated that the request to allow the people of the state to vote on this issue next year was one of a number of measures adopted by Texas party members at their convention last week in Houston, under a provision titled "State Sovereignty", which stated that "pursuant to Article 1 of the Section 1 of the Texas Constitution The federal government has violated our right to local self-government and therefore should ignore, oppose, reject, and nullify federal legislation that infringes the rights of the Tenth Amendment of Texas.”

The magazine added that "Texas reserves the right to secede from the United States and the Texas legislature should be invited to ratify a popular referendum next year for the state's citizens to determine whether or not the state should reassert its status as an independent state."

The Republicans, in their conference, which included about 5,000 people, also approved a resolution rejecting the results of the last presidential elections in the country, which resulted in Democrat Joe Biden becoming president of the country.

"We deny the results of the presidential elections...and insist that the current president was not legitimately elected by the people of the United States," the resolution stated.

State Representative Kyle Biederman presented a bill last year in which he called for a referendum on leaving the United States, which was supported by Texas Republican Party President Allen West, but the bill failed after it was rejected by members of the US House of Representatives.
