The rising fuel prices have completely eaten up the tank discount.

Now the Union is pushing for quick improvements.

Munich – The tank discount fizzled out again shortly after it was introduced.

Diesel is even more expensive than before the tax cut on June 1st.

With 2.054 euros per liter in the nationwide average on Sunday, the price exceeded the value of May 31st by one cent, as the ADAC announced on Monday.

This means that the tax reduction of 16.7 cents per liter has already been canceled out by the price increase.

Fuel prices are rising despite the tank discount – diesel is becoming more expensive

The fuel had already reached the mark of May 31st last Friday and exceeded it again for the first time on Saturday.

Super E10 cost 1.913 euros per liter on Sunday, but unlike diesel, it has become a few cents cheaper in recent days.

The price of crude oil had also fallen recently, which normally eases the pressure at the petrol pumps.

The tax relief on fuel, which applies from June to August, is intended to relieve consumers in view of the high fuel prices.

Including VAT, it's about 35.2 cents for premium petrol and 16.7 cents for diesel per liter.

However, the fall in prices after the law came into force never reached this level.

Super E10 was 23.8 cents cheaper on Sunday than on the day before the tax cut, which, according to calculations by the federal government, will result in a loss of revenue of 3.15 billion euros.

Strong criticism of the tank discount - and worries about the future

ADAC fuel market expert Jürgen Albrecht looks to the future with concern: "There is a risk that the high prices with significantly higher margins on the way from crude oil to the refinery to the filling station will solidify because people get used to the high prices ", he says.

“Anyone deserves what is now being paid additionally.

And the prices are far too high in view of the development of the oil price, which has even fallen a bit recently.”

The tax cut was and is the subject of criticism from various quarters.

Among other things, it was criticized that it sent the wrong signal in terms of climate policy, that it was of particular benefit to the wealthy or that it slowed down the competitive pressure on fuel prices.

There are also allegations that a large part of the measure will not benefit drivers, but the oil industry.

According to calculations by the Munich Ifo Institute, the discount for diesel has been passed on in full and most of the discount for petrol has been passed on.

The mineral oil industry recently referred to increased purchase prices and costs.

The Bundeskartellamt is investigating the development of fuel prices.

However, it has repeatedly pointed out that high prices alone cannot be banned.
