Romeo and Juliet in times of witch hunts - a theater walk, to which the cultural association Schongauer Land invites you for the weekend, is about a hopeless love.

Schongau – A play in which the audience walks from scene to scene for the next scene: the cultural association Schongauer Land and the Lechtheater invite you to do just that over the weekend.

Scenes from the play "The Witches' Carriage" are shown.

Claudia Martin, herself part of the theater group, grabbed the novel of the same name, which is based in Schongau, and rewrote it as a play.

The book, in turn, is based on a story by Joseph Friedrich Lentner, who lived in Peiting, says Eleonore Fähling from the cultural association.

Interested parties were able to get a preview of the “Hexenfuhre” last autumn as part of the first Schongau Art and Culture Festival (KUKU), where there was a scenic reading.

Friends of the "Henker's Daughter" books will meet old acquaintances in the play, says Fähling.

Because the Kuisls, the Schongau executioner family, are also prominently represented in the "Hexenfuhre".

"The Witches' Carriage": That's what it's about

The piece is reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet – albeit in times of witch hunts.

Because, like the Shakespearean play, it is about a young couple whose future is hopeless: Johanna, the strikingly beautiful daughter of a convicted midwife, is targeted in 1592 by the dreaded "Magician of Schongau".

When she falls in love with the executioner's son, fate takes a dramatic turn.

"Since both come from families that are considered dishonorable and also have to live outside the city walls, their love doesn't stand a chance," explains Fähling.

Unless they manage to escape from Schongau - on the witches' train.

"But they have no idea of the dark secrets of the honorable citizens of Schongau who want to determine their fate," the performance is announced.

Even when she was reading the book, Fähling was fascinated by how the time was described, she says.

The fact that the story is now being performed at the original locations, so to speak, at historically significant places in the old town of Schongau, makes it a special experience, she is sure.

In small groups of around 15 people, each accompanied by a city guide, you go from one venue to the next to follow the action up close.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.

"The Witches' Carriage": dates for the theater walk

The theater walk is offered on the last weekend in June – on Friday, June 24, Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 – at 5 p.m., 5.30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Tickets for 19 euros are available in advance at "Buch am Bach" in Peiting and at "Frauenzimmer" in Schongau.

An evening box office cannot be offered.

"But both shops are still open on Friday and Saturday morning," says Fähling.

There are also ways for last-minute visitors to get tickets, as long as they are not sold out.

The starting point is not revealed either – it is on the ticket.

About one and a half hours are planned for the theater walk.

Arrived at the fifth station, the spectators can look forward to a musical finale with the instrumental group "Farbenklang".

There is also a culinary tasting (included in the price) by the landlord of the Blaue Traube.

Incidentally, the actors of the Lechtheater will not be dissuaded from their plans by the weather.

If it rains, spectators are asked to simply come in weatherproof clothing for the walk through the old town.

The performances then take place in closed rooms.
