"Unimaginable pain": After five and a half years, a young man was convicted of murdering a 16-year-old in the north

The verdict, read by the judge in tears, ruled that the young man was guilty of murder.

The Youth District Court today (Wednesday) convicted the young man who stabbed to death six years ago the 16-year-old girl Yjdan Abu Hamid from the village of Kasra.

This, at the end of a legal proceeding that lasted five and a half years.

According to the indictment, the young man followed the girl on the way back from school, and stabbed her many times.

The three judges, Diana Sela, Eran Cotton, and Avi Levy, unanimously convicted the young man of the girl's murder in 2016.

Sela, who headed the panel of judges, even burst into tears during the sentencing.

In contrast, the judges acquitted the young man of obstruction of justice.

"The tribunal did its job," Yejdan's father said at the end of the verdict, "I fought for justice, and justice was done. I do not want to say I am satisfied but a stone has fallen from my heart."

In doing so, he added that "the longing for Lijdan exists all the time, both for me, for my wife, and for our sons."

The father also shared the difficulty of seeing publications about the young man who was convicted of murdering his daughter.

"We would see publications that he was in school or at home. That was the real difficulty."

An acquaintance who accompanied the family added that "this affair has been clouding the community for almost six years."

The murder of the girl took place on December 20, 2016. According to the indictment, the young man was waiting for the girl on the way to her walk home from school.

After meeting her, an argument arose between the two, during which he stabbed the girl many times that caused her death, and fled the scene.

The young man's defense attorney, Zaki Kamal, said that "this procedure took a long time and I have reason to believe that an appeal will be filed against the verdict. I thought and still believe that the defendant did not commit the offense. But we will deal with court decisions accordingly, ".

Attorney Abir Bachar, who accompanies the deceased's family, said that "a civil lawsuit is also expected."

Dozens of Kasra-Samia residents arrived at the court today.

Some showed solidarity with the family of the deceased and stood in front of the courtroom in T-shirts bearing her picture.
