A narcorrido pays tribute to the 'hitman monkey' killed in a shooting in Mexico

"El Changuito was not brave, but neither was he left. He is already heading for heaven, but he left us a legacy," says the song in honor of the animal, the pet of a drug trafficker who was also killed.

The death of a monkey, which was found wearing camouflage clothing and a bulletproof vest lying on its owner's chest after a shootout between drug traffickers and Mexican authorities in the State of Mexico, has stirred up social networks, generating emotional tributes and even a narcocorrido, according to The Washington Post.

The animal, baptized as

El Chango

, belonged to an alleged member of the La Familia Michoacana cartel, 20 years old, who also died in the shooting in Texcaltitlán on June 16.

The confrontation during an operation by agents of the Attorney General's Office and the National Guard left 11 dead and at least 10 detained, according to local authorities.

Like other narcorridos, a musical genre that praises drug lords, the lyrics mention the violent end of the mascot: "There are witnesses of how he was executed," proclaims the ballad

"It's a very short life, it wasn't Chango's turn. Someone stole his story, because he came to succeed and shine in so many things," says the song, which spread virally on the social network Twitter.

"El Changuito was not brave, but neither was he left. He is already heading for heaven, but he left us a legacy," concludes the song in his honor.

The theme, whose authorship is unknown, is accompanied by images in which the monkey is seen eating a banana, climbing on the shoulders of its owner or lying on his chest when both were killed.

The Familia Michoacana emerged in the 1980s after a split from the Gulf Cartel, one of the oldest criminal organizations in the country, according to the aforementioned newspaper.

It is one of the most active groups in the export of methamphetamine, and is known for the brutal violence of its members.
