A medical team at the General Authority of Damascus Hospital “Al-Mujtahid” succeeded in carrying out a qualitative and precise surgical procedure for a rare case by removing a “retinal thyroid cyst” and 16 similar cases were recorded worldwide.

The seriousness and rarity of the case, according to the ear, nose and throat specialist who supervises the case, Dr. Razan Al-Jassem, is that a cyst in the thyroid gland is rare because the thyroid gland is deaf and does not have the ducts that form cysts, pointing out that in the history of medicine 16 similar cases were recorded on world level.

In a statement to SANA reporter, Dr. Al-Jassem pointed out that the cyst on the thyroid gland in the case of the patient who underwent the operation was large in size and pushed the airway consisting of the trachea and larynx to the right side, and that it was pressing on the recurrent laryngeal nerve responsible for the movement of the vocal cords, which required great accuracy. During the surgical procedure to ensure that the vocal cords are not damaged or the laryngeal nerve is injured.

Dr. Al-Jassem indicated that the surgery, which lasted for 3 hours, was performed under local anesthesia with sedation, blocking the cervical nerves on both sides, in addition to the upper laryngeal injection on both sides, due to the high risk of general anesthesia, as the patient suffers from severe pulmonary fibrosis.

In the details, Dr. Al-Jassem explained that a 68-year-old patient was referred to the hospital with a complaint of swelling on the midline of the neck, measuring about 9 times 7 centimeters, which appeared 15 years ago and gradually increased in size and is painless on palpation and without symptoms or inflammatory signs indicating that the lesion was mobile on swallowing It was accompanied by dyspnea and difficulty swallowing, in addition to hoarseness that started two months ago.

Dr. Al-Jassem indicated that after the surgical operation, the patient was placed under observation until he recovered and became in a good general condition and biologically stable, and then he was discharged after the improvement of all compressive symptoms, "breathlessness, dysphagia, and hoarseness."

The surgical work was attended by anesthesiologist Dr. Iyad El-Sayed, a number of resident doctors, an anesthesiology technician and an operating nurse.
