Behind the scenes of the greater Nuremberg transport association (VGN), work is already being done on tariff increases from 2023.

However, prices should not explode like they do at the pumps.

Nuremberg - be mobile with a few euros?

The bitter reality after the summer 9-euro ticket driving pleasure could soon look very different, at least in the huge transport association Greater Nuremberg (VGN).

The directional decision for the next price increase has already been made, a VGN spokeswoman said on request.

At the moment, only the price tables for the individual tickets would be coordinated.

The tariff increase in the VGN area could therefore be decided shortly before the summer break.

The price increases are to be made public before the summer holidays

"At the end of July after the last committee meeting, we will communicate the price increase," says a spokeswoman for the North Bavarian Transport Association, which extends from Nuremberg in the center of Amberg in the east to Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the west via Lichtenfels in the north to Treuchtlingen in the south, and with around 750 lines transport over 250 million passengers annually.

Prices in the Nuremberg transport association should not explode

How big is the price increase this time?

Exact figures are not yet available from the transport association.

After all, the formula is already known.

The ticket prices are to be calculated according to the "Mobidex", which is made up of the average income of private households and the forecast cost increase of the transport companies.

And the transport association will provide another crucial piece of information on request.

The increase in ticket prices was calculated before the war in Ukraine and the explosion in energy costs that followed, so that the price jump according to VGN next year "will not be above average", according to the spokeswoman.

An official decision has yet to be made

Speaking of which: the higher prices have not yet been officially approved.

The decision still has to be taken unanimously by the ten transport companies in the shareholders' meeting and the basic contract committee.

In particular, the approval of the regional authorities for the price jumps is also likely to depend on political factors.

Last year, for example, the city of Nuremberg did not participate in the annual price increase.

Is the city of Nuremberg again not taking part in the latest round of awards?

In June 2020, the city council in the Franconian metropolis decided that fare increases should be postponed for another year.

The result: the VGN prices in tariff levels A and K were not increased as of January 1 of this year.

The city of Nuremberg has to compensate the transport association for the corresponding loss of income.

This summer, shortly before the crucial meeting of the basic treaty committee, which is to take place on July 28 and will be chaired by Thomas Bauer, president of the government of Middle Franconia, Nuremberg could step out of line again.

This time, the threatening referendum for the introduction of the 365-euro ticket could play a role.

After the cheap annual ticket for everyone, the advocates of cheap tickets in the Franconian metropolis also demand that the city of Nuremberg reject the fare increases planned for 2023 in the VGN.
