Although excluded from the strike: 54,000 special education students remained at home Israel today

2022-06-22T12:53:58.046Z

Parents are angry that the small special education classes in the school remained closed, even though they were not included in the strike • On the other hand - special school teachers are angry that they were not included • Special education teacher: "We are transparent, I wish someone would hear our voice - just because we deserve it go on strike"

Special education classrooms remain closed:

The teachers' union announced a strike in the entire education system, except for special education, which is supposed to operate normally, but the education system has about 54,000 special education students in regular schools - and, to the frustration of parents, remained today (Wednesday) At home.

The teachers' union explains the situation by saying that if they open the special education classrooms in "regular" schools, the principals will have to go to school.

This decision leads to frustration and anger among parents of children in special education.

"This is discrimination among special education children," says Inbar Carmel, the mother of a first-grade student studying in Ness Ziona.

She said: "While anyone in a special education school came to school as usual, special education children attending communication classes for autistic children in a regular school were forced to stay home. There has never been such a thing as discriminating against some special education children for any purpose."

She further says: "The children are losing treatments like occupational therapist communication communication and the like. They are experiencing a major setback, they are in a fit of rage because the routine has been interrupted. I understand the strike and understand the teachers but these children can not be harmed. We have a standard framework - like all special education. Only now has someone made a scandalous decision that hurts the most vulnerable students and in fact leaves tens of thousands of special children just because they are studying in a structure that is 'normal'.

"In the Histadrut, teachers are afraid of the parents of special education students and not of the fact that the staff is dwindling."

The distress of the parents of special education students staying at home is great.

But distress is also experienced by special education teachers - special education kindergartens and special education schools - which have been excluded from the strike.

Their claim is actually against Yaffa Ben-David, secretary general of the Teachers' Union, who they claim is afraid of their parents and does not include them in the strike.

"I can not understand why special education is excluded, the feeling is that they are afraid of the parents of special education students and not that the staff is dwindling," says Daniel, a teacher in special education.

"I understand that we want to consider parents and their children but ignore our difficulty. Our salary is degrading in the face of the work so hard we do. We are transparent, I wish someone would hear our voice - just because we also deserve to strike."

She says she earns less than NIS 7,000, full-time with a master's degree: "The cost of living, the rental prices of the products in the supermarket are only rising and I have to use my parents to survive. I want to be able to pay for things myself - because I work hard enough."
