Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced today (Wednesday) that he will oppose a vote on the defendant's law, after giving his party members freedom of vote on the issue.

The coalition is considering putting the law to a vote in a special procedure through a constitutional committee headed by Gilad Karib, but senior officials estimate that the chances of passing it are slim.

This is despite the fact that the coalition factions that support the law have a majority even without the right because of the common support.

"The right to vote and to be elected is sacred and is the essence of democracy. That was and remains my opinion," Bennett tweeted.

"Although we have seen that there are heavy prices for the tenure of a criminal defendant, but those who have to decide in relation to them are the citizens of Israel. Probably on the eve of an election - do not try to change the rules of the game, but let them decide at the ballot box.

On Sunday, MK Gabi Lasky (Meretz) put on the agenda of the Ministerial Committee for Legislation a private bill that would ban a criminal defendant from forming a government.

MK Eli Avidar also introduced a similar bill together with MKs Ahmad Tibi and Osama Saadi.

Avidar turned to Lapid this morning and called on him to postpone the date of the dissolution of the Knesset for a week so that the defendant's law can be passed.

"We all welcome your entry into the Prime Minister's Office. This is certainly excellent news for the people of Israel, but I would ask you to delay the dissolution of the Knesset so that we can pass the defendant's law," Avidar said.

On the other hand, Knesset Speaker Miki Levy (Yesh Atid) cooled the demand in the coalition to pass the defendant's laws before the Knesset was dissolved for the election. Levy tweeted today: "Let there be no misunderstandings: .

As chairman of the Knesset, it is my duty to do so in an orderly manner. "

MK Lasky responded to the Knesset Speaker's tweet, saying: "The defendant's law has broad consensus in the coalition, because there is an understanding that the political crisis will not end until we succeed in returning the norms to the political leadership in Israel."

In recent days, calls have been growing to enact the defendant's law before the Knesset is dissolved by a large number of coalition factions: Justice Minister Gideon Saar and Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman said they support the law and coalition MKs have resubmitted proposals on the agenda of a ministerial committee. Coalition officials estimate that the chance of passing the law, which is an amendment to the Basic Law of the Government, in three readings until the dissolution of the Knesset next week is impossible.
