Corona policy: without panic and populism

In Corona politics, not everything has always gone according to plan since 2020, mistakes have been made.

A Merkur commentary by Christian Deutschländer.

Munich – Since 2020, the Corona policy has been a learning process full of right and wrong decisions.

Small mistakes: the park bench ban, hopelessly exaggerated.

Medium error: the talk that masks make you sick and don't help.

Big mistake: not having nationwide digital lessons, not even in Bavaria when schools were closed.

Some of this will be revealed quite harshly in the forthcoming nationwide evaluation of the measures.

Good this way.

But hopefully that doesn't slide into shrill dogmatism.

virologists who dug deep into their various opinions, even if some have been refuted multiple times;

Politicians who want to distinguish themselves as shrill opponents of measures just ahead of the AfD (this has brought the FDP three state election defeats).

Corona policy: Panic and populism are torpedoing the preparation

In the third Corona year, Germany can go into the next waves with experience under its belt.

This year alone it will go up and down three more times - as long as the number of seriously ill and dead people does not increase, this is now a manageable part.

As a precaution, there should be another tool box for autumn, not just at the end of September.

And: A change of political tone, preferably now.

Because two things are torpedoing the preparation: panic and populism.
