Mixed breed dogs are adorable grab bags.

But have you always wondered which breed is in your four-legged friend?

How to find out...

Munich – With most pedigree dogs, the characteristics, appearance, size and character can be roughly guessed in advance.

Anyone looking for an active, yet mostly uncomplicated and friendly family dog will often opt for a Golden Retriever or Labrador Retriever.

If you like it really sporty and want a clever four-legged friend at the same time, you can choose an Australia Shepherd, for example.

And if you prefer to take it easy and calm, you can use a Bernese Mountain Dog or a Great Dane.

But all this cannot even begin to be said about a mixed-breed dog.

Where does it come from: Because mostly you don't know either the parent animals or their history.

Nevertheless, many proud piñata owners are interested in what breed is in their darling and would like to know what kind of animal is sitting on their sofa.

Some funny "bad habits" can perhaps be explained a little better this way.

Special features, interests or preferences also want to be understood.

Determining the breed of dog: Which breed is in your mixed breed?

To determine which breeds are in a mixed breed, most owners compare their dog's appearance to a photograph of a pedigree dog.

Size, coat texture, head shape, ears, body and tail are evaluated.

So does the dog have long, short, wiry or curly hair?

Small, large and rounded, pointy erect ears or cute lop ears?

Does he have a long, short, bushy, or curly tail?

And a rather round, square or convex head shape?

If you pay attention to the interaction of the details, you can guess a lot.

Small mixed breeds with large, sticking out ears, huge eyes and a tail carried over the back can be assumed to be a Chihuahua.

Large and rounded bat ears suggest a bulldog or Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

If your mongrel is one of the larger representatives and has pointed ears, the ancestors could be German Shepherd, German Spitz or Siberian Husky.

Determining the breed of dog: There are other options

But if you don't want to bother and make comparisons, you can simply use a clever app that's easy to download.

For example, there would be “Dog Scanner”.

The free app uses a photo or video to determine the breed of dog or looks for similar-looking reference breeds.

Even if it may not agree 100%, it still provides very interesting and useful information.

Another very popular way to determine the breed of your four-legged friend is a DNA test.

A saliva sample is taken using cotton swabs and sent to the relevant laboratory.

Depending on the size of the database, the test also recognizes exceptional breeds and those that are not recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale - the largest cynological umbrella organization).

After about two weeks you get the result together with a certificate and a detailed description.
