The Eli Horowitz Conference on Economics and Society, which provided headlines yesterday (Tuesday) for the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Israel, will today host a variety of public figures and academics to discuss issues on the agenda in the fields of labor, education and science.
Against the background of the political crisis in Israel, the second day of the conference will open with speeches by Defense Minister Bnei Gantz and MK Nir Barkat, followed by panels on "Challenges of the New Labor Market" and "The Role of the Education System in the Mirror of the Labor Market" Karnit Flug, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, Minister of Economy and Industry Orna Barbibai; Prof. Zvi Eckstein, Dean of the Tiomkin School of Economics and Director of the Aharon Institute for Economic Policy at Reichman University and more.
Later in the day, there will be an academic discussion on the "Future of Science in Israel" with the participation of Prof. Eugene Kendall from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem;
Prof. Peretz Lavie, Chairman of the National Council for Civil Research and Development; Prof. David Harel, President of the Israeli National Academy of Sciences; Prof. Michal Feldman of Tel Aviv University and others.
Speaking at the conference yesterday, Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that he would work to reduce the excise tax on the shekel, "even during the transitional government," and pledged: "I will not lend a hand to any election economy."
The Governor of the Bank of Israel, Prof. Amir Yaron, noted that "the resilience of the high-tech sector is much stronger than it was in the dot-com crisis in 2001", and regarding the political situation he added that "Israel's economy has shown impressive ability to grow even in conditions of political uncertainty."
