"

The United States Embassy in Russia has a new official address

," Moscow City Hall said in a statement.

The diplomatic mission is now located at 1, Donetsk People's Republic Square, the name of one of the two separatist territories of the Ukrainian Donbass whose independence Russia recognized in February, just before attacking Ukraine.

This name was given to a hitherto anonymous crossroads, adjoining the embassy.

The names of the streets surrounding the diplomatic mission do not change.

This new official address was chosen after an online vote organized by the Moscow authorities and in which 278,684 people participated, according to the press release from the town hall.

The maneuver is reminiscent of a similar measure in the United States.

In 2018, a portion of the avenue along the Russian Embassy in Washington DC was named "

Boris Nemtsov Plaza

", a Russian opponent assassinated in 2015 right next to the Kremlin.
