The Russian Ministry of Defense announced today that 1,418 candles were lit in relation to the number of days of the Great Patriotic War waged against the Soviet Union in the Cathedral Square in the main temple of the Russian Armed Forces in the suburbs of the capital, Moscow.
The ministry said in a statement posted on its website today, “As part of the (Mourning and Memory Candle) event in the cathedral square, military personnel, students of higher military education institutions, representatives of the Avangard Military Foundation and youth organizations, including members of UNarmia, lit 1,418 candles of the eternal flame in a particle of glass. It was brought the day before from Brest fortress in Belarus.”
The ministry added that the soldiers put candles on special bases in the cathedral square, where each candle represents one day of the Great Patriotic War, at exactly four o'clock in the morning local time on this day, which coincides with the date that Nazi Germany launched an undeclared war against the Soviet countries 81 years ago. .
The ministry indicated that the "Mourning and Memory Candle" event was held all over Russia and the residents of different cities of Russia honored the memory of the martyrs and lit candles in memory of those who did not return from the war.
