A Chinese-Canadian study revealed that sitting for long hours increases the risk of death from major cardiovascular diseases.
The results of the study conducted by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Simon Fraser University in Canada and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association of Cardiology showed that the risks of mortality and major cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction, stroke and heart failure, increased about 13% of the participants who sat between 6 and 8 hours per day compared to the participants who sat for less than 4 hours per day.
The study, which involved 100,000 people between the ages of 35 and 70, showed that people who sat for more than 8 hours recorded an increase in those risks by 20 percent.
The study concluded that reducing sitting time with increased physical activity is likely to be an important strategy to reduce the risk of premature mortality and cardiovascular disease.
