The United States said it was closely monitoring the state of health of a former American Marine imprisoned in Venezuela and hospitalized according to his family after a suicide attempt.

Matthew Heath is being treated, several sources told AFP.

A family spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday evening that he was "

fighting for his life

".

Arrested in September 2020 for "

terrorism

", he was accused by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of espionage and planning attacks on electrical and oil installations.

Not the only American detained

"

We are monitoring Matthew's health and well-being as closely as possible and are in regular contact with Matthew's family

," a US State Department official said Tuesday.

The former Marine's lawyer, Guillermo Heredia, said he was now "

out of danger

".

Matthew Heath is not the only American detained in Venezuela, whose relations with the United States are strained.

Caracas has accused the White House of wanting to overthrow Nicolas Maduro's regime.

Airan Berry and Luke Denman, two former American soldiers, were sentenced in Venezuela to 20 years in prison for terrorism.

They were notably found guilty of a failed armed incursion into Venezuelan territory.

And five former Citgo oil company executives accused of corruption - four Venezuelan-born Americans and a Venezuelan permanently residing in the United States - have been detained in Venezuela since 2017.
