The Dachau City Library celebrated its 15th anniversary at Max-Mannheimer-Platz.

There were numerous actions, workshops and even poems to take away.

Dachau – “This place has so many sides, just explore them, word for word.” Poetin Sabine Magnet last wrote these lines on her red typewriter in front of the main office of the Dachau city library.

Last week it celebrated its 15th anniversary at Max-Mannheimer-Platz 3.

With its "poetry to go" - loosely translated: Poetry to go - Magnet was one of the attractions that the library offered for the location's birthday.

"I wrote an unusually large number of poems for the wedding today," she said after her three-hour session in front of the entrance.

During this time, she spontaneously typed about 30 poems into her machine for visitors.

People gave her keywords or topics and she conjured up great lines from them.

"There was also a poem about fruit for a boy or about unicorns and doing nothing," reports the artist.

When Magnet's clattering of typewriters slowly became quieter, the first visitors came for a reading.

In the end, 15 interested people sat in front of the author Heidi Rehn, who read from her novel "Die Buchhandlung in der Amalienstraße", but also talked a lot about it.

Rehn's publishing house approached her to ask whether she would like to write a book about a bookstore, the author explained about the genesis of her book.

The woman from Munich said yes to the request and – as with all her novels – then invested a lot of time in research.

"It's the perfect novel for all novel lovers," praised Slávka Rude-Porubská, head of the city library, since Rehn's book mentions many other novels that can of course be borrowed from the library.

Anniversary of the Dachau City Library: Varied workshops and activities

In the end, Rude-Porubská was very satisfied with the anniversary day, on which the library was open for 15 hours, in keeping with the anniversary.

Tinkering a flower press out of wood, a pajama reading night for children from the age of eight or the "Silent Reading Party" were offered until midnight.

"We had about 1,023 visitors, 1,030 media loans and issued ten new ID cards," Rude-Porubská summed up with satisfaction.

On a normal day there are usually around 400 to 600 visitors.

The anniversary continued last weekend, on Friday and Saturday the celebrations continued with “tinker wild bee hotel”, the “recipe exchange market” and other activities.

"In total, we had about 100 participants in the workshops," says Rude-Porubská.

Some children were also eager to participate in a workshop about folding pages from old books.

Orimoto is the name of the activity, in which it was important to get inspiration about what to do with old books before they end up in the waste paper.

Gift packaging, origami birds, paper blossoms, baskets and decorative books were made by library staff Birgitt Heermann and Alexandra Maly.

By the way, the next anniversary of the library will not be long in coming, because the Dachau City Library will soon be 50 years old!
