The coalition is trying to expedite the enactment of laws in order to stop Benjamin Netanyahu from forming a government • MK Karib: "The Israeli public can not be held hostage to political exercises"

The defendant's law comes up for discussion:

The Law, Constitution and Justice Committee, headed by MK Gilad Karib of the Labor Party, will discuss next Sunday the law prohibiting a criminal defendant from forming a government.

The coalition's move began with the aim of speeding up the legislation and promoting it as soon as possible in order to prevent Benjamin Netanyahu from forming an alternative government already in the current Knesset.

If the Knesset dissolution law is passed, Netanyahu will not be able to form a government and elections will be held in November.

So if the defendant's law passes with the law to dissolve the Knesset, Netanyahu will not be able to run for government.

The Knesset's legal advice provided a reference on the subject: "It is very doubtful whether the Constitution Committee has the authority, and in any case this is not necessary, as long as the chairman of the Knesset committee does not delay the continuation of the legislation."

The committee's chairman, MK Karib, said that "the Israeli public can not be held hostage to political exercises. Once the Knesset has voted almost unanimously to advance the election, the process must be completed quickly and efficiently. We will do this through the Constitution Committee. "

Karib also referred to the defendant's law and said that "this issue has been on the public agenda since the first day of the current Knesset, and there is room for a serious and in-depth discussion in the constitutional committee in charge of election and government laws."
