Dramatic US ruling in the field of weapons: additional millions will be eligible for a license | Israel Today

Supreme Court justices reject New York State law conditional on obtaining a firearms license proving the need for self-defense • This means that stricter firearms laws in a number of major states will likely also be disqualified because they violate the constitutional right to be armed.

U.S. Supreme Court justices on Thursday ruled that a New York state law granting a license to carry a weapon in a public space in proving the need to do so violates the U.S. Constitution, which protects citizens' right to be armed.

It is one of the strictest laws in the United States in the field of weapons, so its disqualification will actually allow millions of citizens to obtain a license even without providing any explanation or justification.

"Because New York law issues licenses only when the license applicant demonstrates a special need for self-defense, we have concluded that the manner in which licenses are granted in New York State violates the Constitution," Judge Clarence Thomas wrote on behalf of the Supreme Court.

Three of the nine judges objected, but the six Conservatives in the Supreme Court ruled.

The Supreme Court's decision came precisely against the background of a significant breakthrough in Capitol Hill, where senior officials from both parties reached a compromise formula that would allow legislation to increase supervision of mentally disturbed people or disaster victims before they are licensed.

However, it appears that this ruling will not prevent states from denying eligibility for weapons in cases where there is a criminal or other problematic past on the part of the applicant.

But the disqualification of the law in New York will likely lead to the disqualification of similar laws in other major U.S. states.

However, the extension of eligibility embodied in the ruling will prevent states from limiting the quantity and nature of arms of license applicants.

Following the ruling, President Biden said he was "very disappointed" with her, as he said she was "against common sense and the constitution and she should bother us all."
