The Council of the European Union decided tonight (Thursday) to grant the status of a candidate for membership in the Union of Ukraine and Moldova, after yesterday the European Parliament recommended that the countries join the Alliance by a majority of votes.
Ukrainian President Ludimir Zalansky welcomed the EU decision, saying it was a "historic moment in European-Ukrainian relations".
The Ukrainian president tweeted on Twitter that "Ukraine's future is within the EU. Local media in Ukraine have reported spontaneous celebrations in the city's central Aidan Square.
