The two also reviewed policy developments in the Palestinian and Lebanese arenas, and discussed regional challenges.

The meeting addressed the importance of continuing to strengthen the regional "axis of resistance", and possible cooperation with Hamas, in the face of "threats to the Palestinian issue."

The meeting was attended by Haniyeh's deputy, senior Hamas figure Saleh Al-Aruri, as well as the deputy leader of Hamas leader in Gaza, Khalil al-Khiya.

Hamas aims to expand the conflict with Israel and turn southern Lebanon into another front of possible conflict, alongside Gaza, Judea and Samaria, and Jerusalem.

The organization has been trying to gradually establish its military strength and capabilities in this area in recent years.

The meeting comes in the shadow of tensions between Israel and Lebanon over the issue of drawing the maritime border, and Nasrallah's recent threats that "the resistance is militarily capable of preventing Israel from producing gas in the disputed territory."

The US envoy held talks in Lebanon with senior leadership figures, in an attempt to advance understandings on the issue.
