Foreign reporter and author Susanne Koelbl meets Sönke Neitzel, 53, in the SPIEGEL capital city studio - and as a subscriber you can follow the interview in the live stream and also ask Neitzel your questions!

The historian is convinced: »The Germans have to get used to the reality of war again«.

First he will justify his point of view in a short statement, then he will face the discussion.

Neitzel holds the only chair in military history in Germany.

Before taking on this professorship in Potsdam in 2015, he taught in Mainz, Bern, Glasgow and at the London School of Economics and Political Science, among other places.

Defend your own security with weapons

Neitzel's main areas of research include modern military history and the history of violence, as well as the history of the Bundeswehr in an international context.

To understand the Ukraine war, he draws comparisons to earlier wars and analyzes which decisions led to military catastrophes.

The conflict with Russia could drag on for a long time, says Neitzel.

And sanctions will do little to change Vladimir Putin's behavior, he's convinced of that.

If our norms and our security are threatened, Germany must be able to defend them, even with arms, if the worst comes to the worst.

Make the Bundeswehr fit for war again

For decades, however, people in this country assumed that the major military conflicts were basically behind them.

The Bundeswehr certifies that Neitzel is in a correspondingly desolate state - and he calls for the troops to finally be made fit for war again.

"

The age of peace is over, for the Germans too

,"

says Neitzel.

You have to face this reality.

After the event with Professor Neitzel, the theologian Margot Käßmann will be a guest at SPIEGEL Deep Dive on July 5 at 6 p.m., who takes a completely different point of view than the historian Neitzel or the Ukraine expert Liana Fix, who spoke in the first program of SPIEGEL Deep Dive had presented her point of view.

Käßmann says: »Weapons do not create peace!« You can already register for this event – here .
