Music in the service of medicine: the surprising tool against the common childhood disease
A study conducted at Schneider Hospital found that playing the music clips was able to screen out the disturbing background noises of devices and staff in the pediatric ward and improve the physiological indicators of patients with bronchiolitis.
"Nothing helped, and suddenly we saw that within 25 minutes there are rapid changes we did not see"

Playing music for toddlers up to the age of two improves their vital metrics and makes them recover better from bronchiolitis - the most common childhood disease up to the age of two.
The study, conducted by Dr. Noa Ziv, a senior physician in the pediatric ward at Schneider Hospital, involved 52 children who were divided into three groups. The first group had complete silence and served as a control group. Physiological parameters in adult patients During the study, 70 plays were performed, with each patient playing music for 25 minutes once a day or several times during hospitalization, using headphones that were adjusted to a volume that would not exceed the volume.
The three groups were hospitalized following a respiratory virus called bronchiolitis.
The researchers examined the toddlers' blood oxygen levels, breathing sounds while listening to the lungs, the use of respiratory auxiliary muscles and the rate of respiration.
The test showed that patients in the three groups - including the control group, showed improvement in the indices and were discharged home more quickly than patients for the same virus who did not participate in the study.
"The indices have improved."

"We understood that what was important was that we neutralized the patients' noise in the ward, so it did not matter if they heard music or were quiet," Dr. Ziv explained about the improvement in the control group's indicators. The team - is the one that brings about an improvement in the physiological parameters.
That is, in the early stages of our patients they are very afraid of unfamiliar noises, when they are wrapped and calmed they improve quickly that even we did not watch. "
60% of the children in the silent group, 77% of the children in the instrumental music group and 74% , The children who participated in the study did not need oxygen, ate better, showed alertness, joy and a better feeling. The parents also reported that the child was happier, compared to a normal patient.
"During the natural course of this disease nothing helped us and suddenly we saw how within 25 minutes there are rapid changes that we did not see in battle in normal patients," Ziv said.
"It's exciting to lead research that comes out of the box and manages to help our patients in a pleasant, non-invasive, and inspiring way like music. I hope this is the beginning of many studies in the field that can help more children and patients."
