The Eye Trick That Makes People Fall In Love With You (@sophieroselloyd)

A new study by psychologists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology claims to have found the most effective flirting techniques for men and women, given the purpose of flirting - a serious relationship or a fling.

The researchers, who published their findings in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, examined students in the U.S. and Norway, all heterosexuals. The flirt is male or female. The

researchers also examined the participants' extroverted levels, their age, their closeness to religion, how willing they are to be in a relationship, and how attractive they are in the dating market.

"The most effective flirting technique depends on your gender and whether the purpose of the flirtation is a long-term or short-term relationship," explained Life Edward Otsen Knair, a professor of psychology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in a press release.

For women looking for short-term relationships - a short affair or a fling, for example - the most effective technique was quite unsurprising.

"People see the signs that you are 'sexually available' as highly effective for women who are looking for a short-term relationship, that is, a fling," Kanair said.

Friendly touch like a hug or a light kiss on the cheek are not enough in these situations, so for women who want a quick flick it is best to use cues that emphasize their sexual availability, such as rubbing against potential mates, closeness and making physical contact.

Men looking for a short-term affair could not rely on just one technique.

"The tactics determined to be most effective for women to flirt were purely sexual or physical," the team wrote in the study.

Not surprisingly, men need to work harder.

The team found that for men looking for long-term relationships, "signs of generosity and a willingness to commit to the best employees."

However, if you are looking for more general tips for flirting, there has been one that has seemed universally effective.

"People think humor, or the ability to make another person laugh, is most effective for men looking for a long-term relationship. It is least effective for women looking for a fling, but laughing or giggling at the other person's jokes is an effective flirting tactic for both sexes," Kanair said in a statement.

It worked for all participants from the U.S. and Norway who took part in the study.

"It's not only effective to be funny," added Rebecca Borch, co-author of SUNY Oswego, USA.

"When it comes to a woman, it's very important that you show your potential partner that you think he's funny."
