Well-known Russian musicians and activists Pussy Riot are coming to Dachau on Saturday, August 6th.
Dachau – The artists critical of the Kremlin fled Russia in May and are currently on a tour of Europe.
They will perform in Dachau as part of the celebrations for the 40th International Youth Meeting from July 30th to August 12th.
KJR arranged the performance of Pussy Riot in Dachau
The visit was organized by the prominent punk band Ludwig Gasteiger, Managing Director of the Dachau District Youth Council.
After he heard that the artists who were being persecuted in Russia because of their criticism of the government and the church had fled, he quickly wrote to them on Facebook.
The management of Pussy Riot then clarified the further details of the activists' appearance in Dachau.
Accordingly, it is planned that the twelve-strong artist collective will first be guided through the concentration camp memorial on August 6 at 2 p.m. and then speak to young people in the Max Mannheimer House on the subject of “Art and Resistance in Russia”.
From 8 p.m. the group will give a public performance, which is also open to adults.
According to Gasteiger, admission to this will cost 20 euros, and advance sales will start next week.
Pussy Riot has been harshly criticizing Vladimir Putin for more than a decade
The band members of Pussy Riot had been harshly critical of Vladimir Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church since 2011.
They became famous in this context for their "punk prayer" in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow in 2012, where they shouted, among other things: "Mother of God, Virgin, drive out Putin!" This was followed by a court case at the end of which three of the women involved were each sentenced to two years in a labor camp.
In the past few weeks, Pussy Riot has performed in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and the Munich Kammerspiele.
According to Gasteiger, the fact that they are coming to the comparatively small Dachau with their "Anti-War European Tour" is due to the good international reputation of Dachau's commemorative work.
The women were immediately impressed: their performance, according to Gasteiger, "was made in a few minutes".
