Russia has threatened “retaliatory measures” in the smoldering dispute with Lithuania (see previous update).

According to President Gitanas Nauseda, Lithuania is well prepared for this.

This also includes the exclusion of Lithuania from the joint power grid with Russia, the politician told the Reuters news agency: "We are ready and we are ready for unfriendly actions on the part of Russia, separation from the BRELL system or other actions".

Nauseda called the threats from Moscow "presumptuous".

He wants to discuss the Kaliningrad conflict at next week's NATO summit.

Russia threatens 'retaliation': Lithuania's response 'hostile'

Update from June 22, 11:01 am

: Moscow's response to the transit dispute will be in the "practical" and not in the "diplomatic area".

That's what Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, according to the Ria Novosti news agency.

The government in Vilnius should understand that the Kremlin sees the action as "hostile" and therefore now is "not the time for talks".

Zakharova stressed that Russia reserves the right to protect national interests if the restrictions are not lifted.

The situation requires a "thorough analysis" which will take "the next few days".

Then "retaliatory measures" would be taken.

Kaliningrad dispute between Russia and Lithuania: FDP foreign politician Lambsdorff senses “fake news”

Update from June 22, 9.30 a.m .:

How serious is the transit dispute between Russia and EU and NATO member Lithuania?

The FDP foreign policy expert Alexander Graf Lambsdorff thinks the situation is more relaxed than before the start of the Ukraine war.

Lambsdorff said on rbb24 Inforadio on Wednesday: "As impossible as that sounds, a very sober analysis reveals that the military resources that are normally pooled in the western group of Soviet armed forces are now deployed in Ukraine.

In this respect, the probability that our Bundeswehr will be drawn into a direct military confrontation is even lower than usual.”

The statements from Moscow in the direction of Lithuania would of course also worry the FDP, said Lambsdorff.

"An objective analysis of the situation shows, however, that at least 80 to 90 percent of it is 'fake news' and propaganda.

We have to deal with that.

This is precisely intended to create uncertainty.”

He stressed that the US commitment to this article was "inevitable".

Merz warns of Kaliningrad escalation: The situation in Lithuania came to a head in two ways

Update from June 21, 4:24 p.m

.: A warning from Friedrich Merz (CDU) in the Russia-Lithuania conflict.

The Union faction leader warns Moscow of an escalation: "I can only hope that the Russian side has enough respect, also for the deterrence potential that there is through NATO with the participation of German armed forces," said Merz before a parliamentary group meeting.

The situation in Lithuania came to a head in two ways, said Merz.

It is correct that Lithuania no longer allows overland access for Russian transports that fall under the sanctions regime.

For several days there has been a second escalation with a motion in the Russian Duma to withdraw the decree recognizing Lithuania's independence, criticized Merz.

There is still no information about how broad the approval of the application is.

"But this is another escalation that is emanating from Russia and that is now directly affecting NATO territory for the first time." Merz emphasized: "However, I assume that the military presence not only of the German armed forces, but also of the NATO forces as a whole enough to protect Russia from ill-considered escalation steps.”

Patrushev is considered one of the closest confidants of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin.

He met in Kaliningrad with the local governor Anton Alikhanov.

Accompanying this, harsh threats were made: If cargo transit is not fully restored quickly, Russia "reserves the right to take action to protect its national interests," said the Foreign Ministry in Moscow.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also warned that the situation was "more than serious".

An "in-depth analysis" is needed to work out the Russian response.

If things continue like this, the West will probably soon question the freedom of the seas and block sea access to Kaliningrad, he suspected.

For weeks, talk shows on Russian state television have been clamoring for a “corridor” from core Russia to Kaliningrad.

That would mean a Russian attack on the NATO states of Latvia and Lithuania.

The enclave is only about 500 kilometers from Berlin, but more than 1000 kilometers from Moscow and can be reached from Russia through Lithuania and Latvia or Belarus.
