War-weariness is growing in Western Europe – and Putin is tempting with a remarkably new formula.

A commentary by Georg Anastasiadis.

Munich - The train with the heads of state of Germany, France and Italy on board had barely left Kyiv when the fourth in the alliance of Western European key powers in Ukraine trundled in, Briton Boris Johnson.

And if you listened closely, you could certainly hear different accents in the messages: While the EU troika directed Ukraine's hopes towards EU membership, but was stingy with new weapons commitments, the Brit warned of "Ukraine fatigue" and declining support for the EU Attempt to reclaim lost territories.

This pleased President Zelensky, who announced during a visit to the front in the south of his tormented country that "everything that belongs to us will be taken back".

Ukraine News: Berlin, Paris and Rome promote a deal with Putin

For real?

There is much to suggest that another script is being written in Berlin, Paris and Rome.

There, the costs of the war for Western Europe are now rated as so high and the prospects of regaining the Donbass as so poor that a deal with Putin is being advertised in vague terms.

This was also how Macron's statement was to be understood that one should "not humiliate" Putin.

In exchange for the annexation of Donbass, Russia should accept the EU membership of the rest of Ukraine, which would implicitly amount to a security guarantee.

On Friday, Putin promptly lured with the remarkably new formula that Russia has nothing against Ukraine's EU accession, since this is their "sovereign decision".

Both sides are still trying to improve their options on the battlefield.

Whether Ukraine has to accept the loss of the East will ultimately be decided – contrary to all the West's assurances – not in Kyiv, but in Washington.

There, too, determination to take the showdown with belligerent Russia to the extreme is waning as US consumers are reeling from skyrocketing energy prices and the creeping recession.
