The Haifa District Court today (Thursday) ordered the detention of 24-year-old Atef Khaledi from Nazareth, who is accused of murdering the 3-year-old boy Amar Hujirat from Bir al-Maksur, in custody pending a different decision.

The toddler was killed about six months ago by a stray bullet in a playground in the Lower Galilee.

Atef Khaldi is charged with aggravated murder in aggravated circumstances, aggravated intentional sabotage of weapons offenses and obstruction of justice.

The court based its decision to keep the defendant in custody on the evidence relating to the location of the vehicle and Khalidi's location during the incident.

The toddler's family was also present at the trial.

According to the indictment, Khaledi was working at the time as a manager at a construction and dirt company.

In 2021, it was decided that the company would carry out road construction work near the residential neighborhood in Bir al-Maksur, next to an open public park.

On the day of the shooting, the defendant began to suspect that another contractor was stealing stones and earth from the work site.

Due to this suspicion he decided to shoot an employee who allegedly stole the materials, while adding two more people to him and equipping himself with a 16-M rifle and additional ammunition.

The suspects arrived at the site and fired more than 50 bullets at the worker, when one of the bullets hit the neck of the toddler, who was staying in the park with his aunt and five other children from his family.

The toddler collapsed, lost consciousness and was rushed to a hospital while performing resuscitation operations, which ultimately determined his death.

After the shooting, the defendant and his escorts got into the vehicle and fled the scene as they continued to fire in the air and towards the public park.

The defendant's defense attorneys, attorneys Tami Ullman, and Shadi Saruji and Moshe Gilad will request that Khalidi's case be re-examined in a survey prepared by the probation service.
