Homs, SANA- The Minister of Agriculture, Engineer Muhammad Hassan Qatana, stressed the need to pay attention to the capers plant and to expand its cultivation and development

The Minister of Agriculture, Engineer Muhammad Hassan Qatana, stressed the need to pay attention to the capers plant, expand its cultivation and development in the Al-Mukharram area in the Homs countryside, preserve the areas planted with almonds and grapevines, and stop planting olive trees because they are not suitable for the climatic conditions in the region.

The Minister of Agriculture, during his meeting with those concerned with the agricultural situation and farmers in the Muharram area today, indicated the ministry’s interest in all crops in the region, including capers as a major and strategic crop for which the Muharram villages are famous, and the need for the local community to cooperate to find appropriate ways to manufacture and market it, and to establish a program to develop the reality of almond tree cultivation and the selection of frost-resistant seedlings. To the Ministry's readiness to support the grapevine products manufacturing units and cooperate with the local community to establish projects related to local products that will benefit the region.

The minister explained that starting from next year, the ministry will start electronically numbering livestock in order to reach correct numbers to ensure that plans are drawn up based on them.

In a statement to reporters, the Minister of Agriculture confirmed that the meeting with the farmers comes within the field tours to listen to their demands and suggestions to find solutions to some issues and develop the agricultural reality, especially that the area is famous for the cultivation of almonds, vines and olives, where it was noted that a number of farmers did not know that some laws are ready to address some immediate problems.

He stressed the importance of investing water resources in accordance with the water budget and coordinating with the concerned authorities regarding the issue of renewable energies and their lending, noting that the agricultural sector in the Mukharram region is stable as a result of the efforts made by farmers to continue agricultural work and production despite the current circumstances.

For his part, the Governor of Homs, Engineer Bassam Parsik, explained that Al-Mukharam is the second agricultural area in Homs with the cultivation of almonds, in addition to the diversity of trees and crops in it, indicating that the rural development map drawn up by the governorate aims to support all agricultural areas through viable projects that depend on the agricultural product specific to each region.

For their part, Al Mukhram farmers demanded facilitating obtaining solar energy loans without fees or interest, establishing a factory to manufacture capers products, and implementing workshops to introduce modern methods of caring for almond trees and crops for which the region is famous, providing fuel and finding solutions to the deterioration of almond trees as a result of diseases.
